We celebrated Ella's Birthday last weekend. Everyone had a great time!

On Friday there was a party at Ella's school. We got to see her classroom and meet her teacher as well as some of her friends.

This is a treat I made for Ella and Jack. Unfortunately E does not like "hot dogs or noodles." Jack liked them. Grandparents...just poke the spagetti through the hot dog and boil. Use easy cheese to decorate. The kids will think you are the only person in the world who thought of this!

Tommy rented the slide for the kids at E's party. Jack had to test it out several times before the party started.

The party had a circus theme...popcorn cupcakes by Sara.

There was a face painter at the party. the birthday girl got to go first. Check out her birthday outfit.

My sister Tracy and sister-in-law Belinda had some girl time on Dock Holiday this week. My brother Todd and I arrived on Friday. We spent a lot of time in the water, had a few happy hours, and took a nice long cruise down the lake. It was good to spend time with family, and it was fun to crash the girl's party.

Shirl as always was a fantastic hostess. Tracy and Belinda had a great time.

Ella and Jack spent three days and two nights on the boat, while Sara and Tommy spent some time celebrating their anniversary. Activities for the weekend included swimming, seedoo rides, feeding ducks, turtles, and fish, karaoke, Barbies, Leggos, ball tossing, dress up, hula hoop, and of course Kraft Easy Cheese on goldfish which the kids love. (something started last year and E and J requested it again) Shirley made some great food and made eating fun for the kids...who prefer grilled cheese to all other choices. Here are some pictures from the weekend. Thanks to Tommy and Sara for letting E and J visit Dock Holiday. We had a blast.

Everybody had fun! It is always good to have family visit, especially when they bring the grandchildren. Ella and Jack went swimming and played, and spent quality time with Mom and Dad as well as Pop Pop and Shirl. Good food, good conversation, a nice cruise on Dock Holiday, and quality family time...it does not get any better. Here are a few pictures from the weekend.

My family spent another week together in Panama City. We had such a great time. I can not begin to express the joy it brings me to spend time with the most important people in my life...those I love. Pop Pop's Birthday...the big 60!

Ella was upset that there was not a big party for Pop Pop. I ended up with three cakes, which made E happy.

Friday we received the news that Libby is cancer free. I am so happy for her, Justin, and Ava. Her story is amazing...one of faith, courage, and love. Through the ups and downs she never lost sight of what was important. She has been an inspiration to so many...family, friends, and even people who have never met her. I am so proud of her, as well as Justin.

I want to personally thank everyone for your prayers, encouragement, and support... and thank you Libby for being the person that you are.

Saturday afternoon Stephanie, Mike, and Tyler stopped by the boat for a visit. Stephanie brought a bottle of champagne to celebrate. Stephanie, Shirl and I set on the top deck...very unusal for February...and toasted Libby and her good news, enjoying the beautiful day. Stephanie is very involved in fund raising for cancer, and has been for quite some time. Thanks Steph.

It is Sunday and a gentle rain is falling. I am sitting on the front deck listening to music and enjoying the sweetness of doing nothing... thinking about my family...we are so blessed.

Shirl and I spent Christmas day with Sara, Tommy, Ella and Jack. We had a fantastic time. Justin, Libby, and Ava were in Louisville for a New Years long weekend. It was so good to get everyone together. I got to spend a lot of time with all three grandchildren and celebrate Ava's first birthday. It was fantastic to see Libby, and as you can see from the pictures she looks great... and is so looking forward to completing her treatment. Justin is doing well, and Jack started to call him Unky, which was so cute. I absolutely love it when everyone gets together. Here are a few pictures...more of Ava because she lives further away, and does not get to be on the blog as much as Ella and Jack.

E had a birthday party Saturday. Everyone had a great time. I got to spend a couple of days with the Grandchildren and I love that. After working all day Friday and Saturday getting ready for the party I was told we were having " family hold back" on the cheese dip. I assume that was to make sure there would be plenty for the guests. E and I got to sneak and dip nachos'''just kidding! Our family never holds back. The weather was beautiful and the kids...too many to count... had a wonderful time, The slide was certainly a hit!

Justin came home last Friday!!!! It was so good to see him and spend some time just talking. We went to Louisville Friday night to visit Sara, Tommy, Ella and Jack. It had been a while since Jus had spent time with E and J and they were happy to see Unky. We had a fantastic visit and were up early to drive to Lexington to participate in the Team Libby Golf Outing. The golf outing was put together by friends of Justin and Libby, specifically Ryan. It was a fantastic day of beautiful weather, good golf and seeing people that I have not seen for a long time. Thanks to all of the friends who organized, and friends and family who played in the event or attended and helped make it a success. It was so moving to see friends as well as family be there for Jus and Libby. I also want to thank everyone who sponsored the event...the hole sponsors as well as the corporate sponsors. By the way our foursome was 6 under...not near good enough to win...but a lot of fun.

Friday night we went to the Kentucky game. It was a homecoming for Justin. He graduated from UK and was excited to return to Lexington. UK won a close game. It was a great game to see. Justin, Tommy, Chris and I had a great time. The place was rockin!!!!

End of the game...the fans were rushing the field.

We all went to BW3s after the game...then home to get some much needed rest. Justin had to be at the airport to return to Chesapeake early Sunday. It was a fantastic visit. I am so proud of Justin. He and Libby are so strong. Thanks to everyone for prayers... Libby is through 1/3 of her chemo.

Sunday was beautiful so Shirl and I took a motorcycle ride to Rabbit Hash and spent the afternoon there looking at motorcycles, talking, enjoying some good wine, and riding the beautiful winding Boone County country roads. Riding has always been very relaxing for me, a time to think and chill, and on this day a time to be thankful.

Sorry Shirl...this is the best my cell phone will do.

Ella and Jack spent the weekend on Dock Holiday this weekend. They had a wonderful time and were able to get in their last swim of the year in their little pool. Nothing makes a trip to the lake more enjoyable than watching grandchildren having a great time. E and J are great kids and love spending time on Dock Holiday... They watched videos...played...swam...jumped in the jumper... visited with neighbors, and enjoyed the beautiful weather. Shirl and I had a great time as well. Thanks Sara and Tommy

Last week Libby, Justin's wife was diagnosed with lymphoma. Libby is a strong woman who has a very positive attitude, a strong faith, and family and friends who love her. I have no doubt that this is a battle that she will win and win well!

I visited with Justin, Libby and little A last weekend. Libby's strength and determination are inspiring to me. She is a wonderful wife and mother, and a fantastic daughter-in -law. Libby and Justin are so right for each other.

Sara and Tommy also visited last weekend... another couple so right for each other. I am so thankful for my relationship with my daughter and son as well as the relationship between their families. Just simply good people...loving and supportive.

Being together was comforting as well as reassuring.

Jack celebrated his first birthday Saturday. I can not begin to explain how enjoyable it was to see all three grandchildren, and to celebrate with family and friends. The party was wonderful, thanks to Sara's planning and help from others (especially Donna), who just love to be a part of something so beautiful. All of the kid's had so much fun, and I feel very blessed to be able to be a a part of my grandchildren's life. Other that being a parent, I can not think of anything more gratifying.

Road Trip

We took a trip last weekend to Nashville. The weather was cool but dry...make that cold but dry. We rode over 850 miles in three days and had a great time. When we arrived in Nashville we had dinner at the Loveless Cafe. The food was great and I found out that the resturant and I were the same age...we are both still standing. We did a lot of riding and site seeing through the beautiful Tennessee countryside. All of the motorcycles ran great, and we had a safe trip. Thanks to the friends that got the trip together and invited us.

I bought my first motorcycle when I was sixteen before I had a drivers license. Riding my motorcycle at 16 was my "escape", and it is still somewhat true today. It is very relaxing with little to distract you. I have always enjoyed riding and have owned many motorcycles over the years. My current bike is my favorite with the possible exception of the little Honda I had at 16.

Vacation provided Justin a chance to relax and do one of his favorite things. Justin, Tommy and I played Frisbee on the beach. I can not wait until next year.

Sara's love of photography has developed into a part time business. Each year on vacation Sara would get us to pose for pictures. This year in Florida I took a picture with my little inexpensive automatic camera of Sara taking pictures on the beach at sunset. We have had many conversations about picture quality, however my camera is always the one in the sand and in the pool for the candid shots. I enjoyed watching her taking pictures family, and how Ella poses to please momma. Thank you Sara for all the wonderful pictures!

Hero's Ride

Shirl and I spent last Saturday on the Hero's Ride...a benefit ride that helps support injured military personel in memory of local soldiers lost in action in the war in Iraq. Many wonderful memories and a warm comfortable house make moving difficult. It is time to begin living in a new home. I will always be thankful for the years I lived here. This is another part of letting go of the past. I will now live in a condo which I have been working on for two months. I began moving this weekend and hope to finish soon. Change has always been difficult for me, and there is a certain sadness associated with this move. I will take the good memories with me. Living more freely... any body want to buy a house?

This Tuesday I received a drug- eluting stent in my Left Anterior Descending Coronary Artery. (LAD) When there is a blockage of this artery it is referred to as the "Widow Maker"...not a good thing to hear from your doctor. "This term is used because if the artery gets abruptly and completely occluded it will cause a massive heart attack that will likely lead to death". According to my cardiologist my blockage was 90%.
Two years ago I had to have a physical exam before a knee surgery. At that time I had an abnormal EKG. I then took a nuclear stress test which was normal. I had the knee surgery, but because of a family history of heart problems, and the abnormal EKG, the cardiologist asked me to return in one year for another stress test. Three weeks ago I returned for the second stress test. I delayed going for the second test and even cancelled it once because of a number of issues, scheduling, work, personal problems...my marriage ending and all that involves. The nuclear stress test was normal, but my EKG during the test was again abnormal. My cardiologist then informed me that a normal stress test, that is one that showed no blockages anywhere, does not mean that we can be 100% sure that there are no issues. He further explained that the stress test results were approximately 85%...that is there was still a 15% possibility of a blockage that may not be discovered by the nuclear stress test. I have never had a symptom...no shortness of breath...no chest pain. I told the cardiologist that I still play basketball weekly... I admit it is an over fifty league...but we do get a workout. He then told me that some people never have a symptom until they have a heart attack, and that if he were in my position... 57 years old, a family history, and an abnormal EKG, he would have an angiogram.
I reluctantly agreed to have the angiogram the next week. I was awake during the angiogram and heard the cardiologist state that he found it. It was very obvious on the picture he printed for me... a 90% blockage, as he told me later, in my LAD, (the Widow Maker). I hate that term, but it does let you know how serious the problem can be. I was scheduled for a stent procedure six days later and was given medication to take for a week until the procedure. I was told I could not work, or do anything strenuous until I returned to have the stent procedure. I did not tell anyone the extent of the blockage, as I did not want family to worry. I feel fine, just as before, but am relieved to have the LAD open, thanks to an informed doctor and modern technology.
Why put this on my blog? This particular problem can happen to anyone, at any age, however it usually effects men in their fifties. As it was in my case, there may be no symptoms, and the stress test my be normal. I was fortunate. The angiogram showed that there are no other blockages. The problem was discovered before there was a heart attack. My hope is that someone reading this may be helped by being motivated to get checked out. If there is a family history, get to a cardiologist for testing. If you have an abnormal EKG, by all means have an angiogram. Do not rely on normal stress test results. I have had two normal stress tests in a three year period! Be proactive! I have not been feeling well for some time. I attributed it to my personal issues, getting older, and the stress my job involves. I did not even consider that I could have a blockage. Does this sound familiar to anyone? I think a there are many men who put off testing... even some who have symptoms.
It may be too early to tell, but I feel much better now. I am sure that the blockage has been in the making for years. It is curious to me that there can be a 90% blockage in one artery and no other blockages. I have been told this in not uncommon with this particular artery.
My doctor tells me I will be back to normal by next Wednesday. ( one week) If I had not gone for testing... or put it off longer... it could have been a completely different story.
Sara and Justin...sorry for the worry...but I am fine now and feeling better every day! I am looking forward to Spring!!!
Sara, thank you for being there with me for the stent procedure. I know you hate hospitals but love your Dad. Roger, thanks for the ride to and from the hospital for the angiogram...during a snowstorm at 6:30 a.m.

I have always advised Sara and Justin to listen to their heart when faced with difficult decisions. Your heart has to be your compass. Sometimes the head does not notice what needs to change, but the heart can give you the direction you need to go, as well as provide the power to change. In my case, the direction I need to go is to stop being a prisoner to disappointment, resentment and anger, which has not been healthy for me. Justin sent me a card about nine months ago in which he stated he hoped I could live more "freely" For me the heart of the matter... is a matter of the heart, and it is forgiveness. My heart has the power to forgive, which will allow me to live more freely...free of this situation and the feeling produced by it. At this point my motivation to forgive may be self preservation. Resentment and anger have kept me bound to a depressed condition, living in an emotional vacuum, with no way to get free. I have been refusing to forgive by holding on to all of the negative feelings, combined with a sense of betrayal. It has all served to make me miserable. Anger is a sign that something needs to change. Anger and depression can become habitual, and be terribly unhealthy. For the first time in my life I feel that I have more stress than I can handle. Holding on to resentment with an unforgiving attitude creates stress and keeps you from being aligned with your true self. It can block you from experiencing the joys of life. It can impact your health and your quality of life.
I am letting go of the anger, disappointment and disgust, and trusting in God to take it over. Forgiveness will release me from this situation so I can learn from it, and allow me to process my feelings more effectively. I will give this situation no more of my time. This forgiveness means that I have no expectations of the other person. It does not matter if she deserves forgiveness, or if she understands...life feeds back truth in it's own way and time... I wish her happiness.
So now emotionally I can begin to get free of this. It has been a long hard road.
A matter of the heart...forgiveness.
Thanks to family and friends who have been there through all of this. Your patience, encouragement and understanding have helped tremendously.

Ella,
I read your mom's blog and have realized that a lot of her words and thoughts are directed to you. I have a feeling that this may all be saved and given to you at some point, so I decided that we should have an entry from your Pop Pop. I have only been a grandparent for eight months... but I remember the day you were born. We were all there...including four...count them Ella...four grandparents. You are so fortunate to have all of your grandparents, and to have them love you as we all do. I remember seeing my little girl holding her little girl for the first time. What a feeling. That was the point when reality hit me... Ella it takes a while for Pop Pop sometimes... I was a grandfather! Since our recent three generational, (is that a word?) trip to the beach I have been thinking a lot about what it means to me to be your Pop Pop. You and I had a rather one sided conversation about this while we were sitting together on the beach, but I don't think you understood, because you just ripped my glasses off and laughed.
I read somewhere that becoming a grandparent can be difficult for some. It probably has to do with the whole facing the aging thing. There has been no difficulty for your Pop Pop. Your mom and your uncle make me aware on a regular basis that I am advancing on life's journey. It is comforting for me to know that as my life advances, that you Ella will be part of my legacy. Do not let the gray hair fool you...we have a lot of good times ahead, and many memories to make.
One thing I have noticed about being a grandparent that I like is that I am relaxed enough to ignore little disasters that sometimes occur. I will give you an example. While we were in Florida in a grocery store there was a small...well maybe not so small explosion. While you were outside with dad and then mom being changed in the rented minivan, I was going up and down the isles in the grocery store laughing so hard that I had tears in my eyes. Your mom and dad got a laugh as well...but only after it was over.
I keep mentioning our recent vacation because it was the longest continuous time together we have had. I love and I know you will love family vacations. One of the times we were sitting on the beach and you were on my lap, I was thinking how wonderful the world must look through your eyes. To you Ella, the world is endlessly fascinating. It is all so new and fresh to you. Thank you for showing me things that I have grown too jaded by life to notice, and thank you for making me smile more than I have in a while.
Ella, my approach to being a grandparent can be best described as having a thoughtful attitude while doing what comes naturally. We are not going to loose our spontaneity here...so we may make mommy nervous or slightly mad sometimes. That is alright because she loves us both unconditionally so she will get over it. Don't worry, your mom and I have always had open and honest communication, and your dad and I get along just fine. Doing what comes natural is not always the best thing...so the thoughtful attitude will help us balance things out, and hopefully keep your parents off our back. (Just kidding Sara and Tommy)
Just as you are a gift from your parents to your grandparents, you are giving all of your grandparents a special gift as well. We get to experience and enjoy another childhood. You are also offering your grandparents and your parents a wonderful opportunity to reinforce our relationship. So much good stuff from such a little package...
Ella, your parents are a gift for you from your grandparents. Your mom and dad love you so much. I hope you always realize what a lucky girl you are to have the parents you have. I can not say enough about how proud I am of both of them. You will be proud of them too.

I want you to know a few of the many things I love about you.
You are right at home when Pop Pop holds you. Thanks for forgetting about me accidentally banging your head walking in to the boat.
You are so cute when you watch Baby Einstein. I know that you are going to be one smart student.
I can not describe the feelings I had when you fell asleep for the first time while I was holding you...so beautiful.
You get so excited to be in water...whether it is the pool, the ocean, or taking a bath in the sink. You smile, laugh, splash, and have so much fun.
Watching you eat...there is food everywhere...you eat just like your mommy did.
Your laugh is contagious. You had us all amazed at how you laughed when I splashed your belly in the pool. Unfortunately you would not repeat it for the video camera. That's alright, I remember exactly what it sounded like.
Your eyes light up when you see your mom or dad. Their eyes light up when they see you as well.
You go with the flow. You are comfortable, content and happy. Maybe it is because there is so much love directed your way.
You get so upset when you see your bottle and do not get it right away. I do believe you may have a temper, and it let's me know that you will be strong and stand up for yourself.
I like it when your mom calls me for advice when your nose is running, or you are not eating right. For some reason she thinks Pop Pop knows all the secrets...that's because I do. I hope that does not stop when you have a little sister or brother. Your mom learned a lot with you and may not need as much advice on the next baby.

Ella, I will pray for you often. I will pray that you will know God, have a strong healthy mind and body, get to live in a peaceful world, oh yea...and get a fine education.

Our vacation was wonderful. Having Ella with us this year was such a blessing. She certainly got a lot of attention with mom, dad, her aunt, uncle, and Pop Pop to hold her and play with her all week. Good luck this week Sara. She is such a good baby, and seems to love the beach like the rest of our family. She also liked the swimming pool... even getting dunked!
I was reminded of our trip when I opened my lap top this morning and Ella's fingerprints were all over it...such cute little fingerprints. I am so grateful that we could all get together for a relaxing enjoyable week together. Thanks again to S and T, J and L, and little E.
