My first experience with houseboats was in 1981 when I spent a long weekend on a friend's houseboat in Harmon Creek on Lake Cumberland. I remember sitting on the top deck, and enjoying the ride. The beauty of it is that houseboats are slow...you enjoy the ride. You can take in the scenery, have a
conversation, and relax. I enjoyed the trip so much I decided that someday I would own a houseboat. I began to search for a boat in the fall of 1999. The first thing I discovered was that they were a lot more expensive then they were in 1981. I started walking docks looking at boats for sale, and talking to brokers. I have always been a boater, but only had experience with runabouts. I was looking at a boat at Lee's Ford during the summer of 2000 that was in my price range. It was not quite what I wanted...but a good
compromise.
Janae and I walked out of the boat on to the dock and a man asked us if we were looking for a houseboat. We toured his boat and he spent two hours with us explaining the systems and the history of the boat. It was
obvious that selling the boat was difficult for him. It was also apparent that he had taken very good care of the boat. Even though it cost more than I wanted to spend, I purchased Last Dance the following day, and closed on it the next Saturday. The fun was just about to begin!
